For early readers, like my 5-year-old, letters and beginning letter sounds are the foundation for reading. I have found that for my little one when he practices writing his letters, it also helps activate and reinforce the method of memorizing the sounds each letter makes. This free printable- Roll and Write Letter Practice- is a fun activity that not only helps your early reader develop their writing skills needed for reading.

Writing is a skill that children start to develop around 4 and even as early as 3 years old. Once you can help your child master the alphabet song (what I started with), you can move on to letter recognition. From there, they can begin to start writing their name and then move on to letter sounds and learning to write the rest of the alphabet. We have some great sources for teaching your child the alphabet. Just remember to be patient, as always, the beginning steps can be tough, but if you stick it out, the reward will be great.
