Sweating is the natural and healthy way our bodies release toxins. It’s essential in helping to cool body temperature and prevent overheating. But, it can feel unpleasant and often leave me feeling insecure about unsightly stains on my clothes. Which is exactly why I’ve been avoiding it for the past 20 years…until recently. As an adult, and new mom, I’ve started to question and research more about what I put on my body, what I use in my cleaning products, and what I consume. I’ve slowly become more health conscious and interested in consuming more all-natural products. Out of all the cleaning and personal care products I’ve made, this Homemade Coconut Aluminum-Free Deodorant is my favorite.

I know what you’re thinking…homemade deodorant? Really? But yes, the combination of baking soda, arrowroot powder, coconut oil, and essential oil works very well and keeps me odor-free all day. The arrowroot powder absorbs moisture and the baking soda controls odor. In my recipe, I use coconut oil to help moisturize and jasmine essential oil for a hint of pleasant scent. Other popular essential oil to add include vanilla, rose, sandalwood, lemongrass, and tea tree.

I must admit, it does take some adjusting when you first make the switch (for me, it took about 2 weeks), especially living in a hot and humid climate like Florida. There are some days when sweating is unavoidable. Like when I’m at a theme park, chasing my 2-year-old around or working hard at the gym. However, for day to day purposes, this recipe works great for me. It’s quick and easy to make, it’s made up of only 4 ingredients, and it gives me peace of mind getting away from the toxic and aluminum filled store brands. I kinda wonder why I haven’t been using it all my life.

Here it is, check out my recipe below for Homemade Coconut Aluminum-Free Deodorant:
Ingredients:
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch
2 tablespoons coconut oil (solid state)
5-10 drops essential oil of your choice (I used Now jasmine oil)
*Add1/2 tablespoon more of coconut oil if you prefer a smoother texture.

Directions:
Combine all ingredients and mix with a fork until you get the texture of a typical solid deodorant.
Using your fingers, apply a pea-sized size amount (or more if desired) under your arms. Rub in and then wash your hands.
Store in an airtight container.
*If you live in a hot and/or humid climate, you may notice your deodorant start to soften due to coconut oil softening naturally when the temperature rises above room temp. This does not make it any less effective.

Hi! I’m Meagan and I’m a 41 year old mom of a high energy almost 9 year old, happily navigating my way through the little boy years. I’ve been married for 14 years. I met my husband over 20 years ago in high school; we got married 10 years later after graduating from the University of South Florida. I currently help run a family business with my parents while blogging about my life and love of DIY projects!
When I’m not at a kids sports game, I enjoy spending time with my family on a beach anywhere. I also love decorating and organizing, fun DIY projects, bargain shopping, and eating out or in! I also love Barbecue anything and a good show or movie on Netflix.

It’s my first time to read about homemade deodorant. I would love to try it myself because I’m a fan of organic products. Other deodorants are full of chemicals, it makes our armpits dark!

I didn’t really know that it’s possible to make your own homemade deodorant. Coconut sounds just perfect to me and it seems so easy to prepare. I’ll have to prepare it at home to check whether I like it too. 🙂
