Back in March 2017, a Netflix original took the internet by storm – I am talking about the show 13 Reasons Why. I’m sure if you were present on the internet at the time, you heard about it. I know I sure did.
I was in the middle of binge-watching The Good Place and Shadowhunters at the time. So I wasn’t able to watch it until recently. I was home alone all weekend, it was rainy, and I was feeling introverted. I watched the entire 13 episodes in about 36 hours.
Anyone who has seen the show might have mixed feelings about it, but this is not about the content. This is about the soundtrack. Because that’s one thing I can take away from this show for sure – the soundtrack was amazing. So whether you loved or hated the show, this is a list of my favorite songs from the show in order of how they appeared on the show.
13 Songs for 13 Reasons Why:
Young & Unafraid – The Moth & The Flame
Ep. 1
High – Sir Sly
Ep. 1
Kinetic – The Cinema
Ep. 2
Into the Black* – The Chromatics
Ep. 3
*This is actually a cover of a Neil Young and Crazy Horse song but a super low-key version.
Amused – Hunger
Ep. 5
The Night We Met – Lord Huron*
Ep. 5
*This is one of my favorite bands and I was so excited to hear them! Listen to this entire album and you’ll fall in love!
It All Feels Right – Washed Out
Ep. 6
The Great Longing – Lost Under Heaven
Ep. 6
Some Dark Places – JR JR
Ep. 7
A 1000 Times – Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam
Ep. 11
Rescue – Rogue Wave*
Ep. 13
*Another one of my favorite bands. Their newest album is all covers and it’s amazing!
Sunburns – Ctznship
Ep. 13
Bored – Billie Eilish
Ep. 13
Honorable Mention:
Only You – Selena Gomez
Ep. 1
*Not really a favorite but it’s such an iconic song, a cover of Yaz, that I thought it was worth a mention.
This soundtrack is such a great mix of indie bands. These are only the top 13 songs but there are much more.
If you’re like me and pay attention to soundtracks in shows and movies, a great resource is a website called tunefind.com. It has pretty much every show or movie with a list of the songs played in the episode with a description of the scene! So put your Shazam away and bookmark that website because it’s amazing.
Did you watch 13 Reasons Why? What did you think of the soundtrack? What was your favorite song?

How awesome. i’ve got netflix but didn’t pay attention to this. will def check it out!
Proceed with caution! It’s a very sad show and can be triggering. But if you do watch it, keep an ear out ;)!
I didn’t watch this but now you have made me want to! Can’t say those would be my favourite song choices but we all have different tastes in music, don’t we. Great resource share, thank you!
Enjoy the journey!
To each their own! Even if you’re not a big fan of the songs themselves, they definitely carry weight as you watch the show. Don’t watch it if you don’t like being sad because it’s very sad.
I was, like you, both hooked on the series and the soundtrack. Loved it all. Especially chromatics and Selena Gomez’s cover of Only You. I think the soundtrack matched the poignancy of that series perfectly. It’s rare that I’m moved by tv but that series really effected me
This was definitely a powerful show. I think it impacts a lot of people in different ways. And the music really helped that impact. I seriously love the Chromatics cover! I can’t stop listening to it.
I haven’t seen this show, but I love new music. The Moth and the Flame is one of my favorite bands!
I love getting new music from TV show soundtracks! I can’t stop listening to The Moth and The Flame now!
I haven’t watched Thirteen Reasons Why because I don’t really agree with the message (I read the book), but I really like the sound of some of these songs. Indie bands? Hit me up! I’m down for that. Definitely going to check out some of these tunes and add them to my monthly playlist.
Yeah, I can totally understand not wanting to watch the show. I didn’t want to watch it for the longest time and it was really freaking sad. But I’m glad I did for the music! All these songs are on my playlist and the show has a soundtrack on Spotify with other songs. Definitely, give them a listen if you’re into indie bands.
I haven’t watched the show but the playlist looks great, I love SirSly! Maybe I need to catch up with it first..
Great playlist. I know this will be a fabulous resource for many!!
Thanks :)!
Ever since sound was introduced to movies and television began, music has absolutely been such a central part of creating the feeling and enjoyment of any show or story. What we watch just wouldn’t be the same without it. I haven’t seen the series you refer to but I will keep an eye out for it now. Plus thanks so much for the tunefind.com tip – this is just great.
You’re so right, music can completely change the tone or impact of a scene.
Tunefind is the best website ever – you are so welcome :)!
So I guess that its time for me to get with the times eh? I have never heard of any of these songs, nor have I watched 13 reasons why. I just hate shows that make me sad!
Tell me about it. It was a really sad show but the soundtrack kept me going! And you’re definitely not out of the loop, I didn’t know more than half these bands. But I love discovering new music from TV show soundtracks. If you don’t want to be sad don’t watch the show. Just listen to the music on the my playlist :P!

Wow! Such a good range of awesome songs!!
I haven’t heard of most of these. I’ll definitely have to give them a listen!
