When my son started teething at around four months old, my first instinct for natural pain relief was to let him chew on chilled teething rings (a go-to for most moms). When these classic favorites didn’t do the trick, I tried what seemed like every teething toy imaginable. I now carry around a gallon size zip lock bag in my diaper bag filled with what I refer to as “chew toys” (my husband hates when I call them that). It wasn’t long before I had to come up with other Natural Teething Remedies for J because he quickly got bored with rubber bananas and bacon strips. So, I took to the kitchen because what else do babies like to do besides sleep and poop? EAT!
Natural Teething Remedies #1- Breastmilk Popsicles.
Before J was old enough to expand his food horizons, I made him breast milk popsicles to help soothe his sore gums. These are simple to make and require very little preparation. Just fill ice cube trays with expressed breast milk and then drop a pacifier (one with a good handle) in and let them set for about 30 minutes. Done.
But as J grew, he also outgrew mom’s boring old breast milk popsicles (or maybe mom got bored of them). Yet again, in my quest for something new, I came up with some more yummy frozen treats that were sure to be just as enticing and natural as breastmilk popsicles!
Natural Teething Remedies #2- Fruit Popsicles
Another one of my son’s favorite frozen teething treats are popsicles. These are also quick and easy to make for on-the-go mommas. My go-to evening popsicle is chamomile banana. The chamomile infused popsicle helps little J wind down for the night while cooling him down on our hot summer nights here in Florida. Give these recipes a try:
Plum Chamomile Popsicles:
-1 plum (substitute with any fresh fruit)
-1/2 cup brewed chamomile tea
-1/2 cup organic whole milk yogurt
-Splash of vanilla or coconut extract (optional)
Combine ingredients, pulse a few times in a blender or Magic Bullet until fully blended and then pour mixture into popsicle molds (these 2 brands from Amazon are my favorite, Nuby & Munchkin.)
If you don’t have popsicle molds you can also use an ice cube tray and popsicle sticks. I suggest cutting the popsicle sticks in half with scissors. If you break them in half the end will be too jagged and baby might cut his or her gums.
Flavors can vary from plum, strawberry, pineapple, watermelon, cherry. If you’re feeling brave, blend some shredded veggies to your popsicles. The list is endless, just use your imagination!
Tip– to easily remove popsicles from the mold run the end under warm water. This will help prevent breaking the mold.
Natural Teething Remedies #3- Frozen Yogurt Bites
It’s as simple as fruit and yogurt! Blend your kiddo’s favorite fresh fruit with organic whole milk yogurt and add a little cinnamon.
Place an empty sandwich bag in a mug and fold the top over the edge of the mug. Spoon yogurt into the bag and then remove the bag and bleed as much air out as possible.
Cut a small tip off the bag and squeeze yogurt onto parchment paper. The perfect bite-sized amount for growing toddler’s little mouth is about a ½” dot. Place yogurt bites in the freezer for at least 30 minutes before serving. Remove with a rubber/plastic spatula and store in the freezer, in an airtight container.
Short on time? Use flavored Greek yogurt and follow the same steps above!
Natural Teething Remedies #4- Frozen Applesauce Bites
These are, by far, the easiest and quickest frozen teething treats you can whip up in less than 5 minutes. If you’ve already got applesauce cups in your pantry, and if you have toddler, odds are that you do, then add 1 applesauce cup to a sandwich bag, cut the tip and squeeze onto a sheet of parchment paper. Place in the freezer for a few minutes before serving. Store extras in the freezer, in an airtight container
Spice up your frozen applesauce bites by adding some mashed raspberries and cinnamon.
The teething stage can sometimes last for what feels like forever. The crabbiness, the whining, the middle of the night hallway pacing, and the pulling your hair out because you don’t know how to help! It’s no picnic, but you can find solace in knowing that it doesn’t last forever and this too shall pass, as they say. Your sweet baby won’t remember a second of it and in the interim, I hope these Natural Teething Remedies help soothe your little one’s teething troubles.
