What You Need
Heat-resistant vessels (mason jars make good candle containers)
Melting pot, Double boiler, or microwavable bowl (I used this pot kit)
Scissors
How to Make Easy DIY Citronella Candles
First, choose a jar for your candle.
I used 16 oz. Mason jars for my candles. The container you put your candle in should be heat-resistant. Mason jars are a good choice because they are canning jars and can withstand high heat. Repurposed candle jars will also work well.
Trim the wicks you’re using to a few inches taller than the height of your candle jar.
Attach the wicks to the bottom of the candle jar. I used wicks that came with stickers to attach the wick to the bottom of the jar. They came in a kit I bought on Amazon. They make it much easier to keep the wick stable in the jar after pouring the wax inside.
Melt soy wax either by placing wax flakes in a double boiler or mixing bowl atop a pot of boiling water or by using a melting pot like the one I purchased on Amazon. Wax flakes can also be melted in the microwave in a microwave-safe bowl.
This melting pot came in a kit that also had a hot plate, an anti-scalding pad, and a spoon. Follow the melting instructions on the wax package. Stir wax until melted. It will look like melted butter when done. **I used about 3 cups of wax per 16 oz. jar.
**Remember wax will melt to about half of its volume.
Add 2 drops of liquid candle dye to the melted wax and gently stir. I used yellow dye.
Stir the citronella oil into the melted wax. Use a ratio of 3 drops of oil to 1 cup of wax.
Pour the wax into the jar and then slightly shake the container so the wax will settle evenly. If you skip this step you may end up with little holes or indentions once the wax solidifies.
Set the holder over the top of the candle jar, running the wick through the center hole of the holder to stabilize the wick.
Now it’s time to let the wax dry. Do not disturb for about 4 hours to keep the candle from becoming lumpy or uneven.
Once the candle is completely set / dry, trim the wick to ½” above the candle.
