We’re deep into summer, and the dog days of August, with its heat, sun, and, of course, bugs! Here in Florida we also have a lot of rain in August so we definitely have a lot of bugs. Just like us, ants and cockroaches want to stay dry too. They actually want to stay alive-not drown outside in their flooded homes. So, they make their way into our homes. DIY Green Pest Control to the rescue!
Whenever possible, I try to use these DIY Green Pest Control methods to curb pesky creepy crawlies. Full disclosure, at my home, which is on the water, I do have quarterly pest control service. In between, I use the cinnamon method of controlling ants all the time. Here at our office, where our little guy spends quite a bit of time, we use DIY Green Pest Control methods.

DIY Green Pest Control:
Ants:
*Use a mix of 20 drops of cinnamon oil and a ½ cup water. Soak a cotton ball or swab with the mixture and spread around areas you want to deter ants from. Straight cinnamon powder will work as well but it’s definitely messier.
*Mix ¼ cup confectioners’ sugar and 1 Tbsp Borax. Sprinkle in affected areas.
Silverfish:
*Make a trap with a dish of 1-part molasses to 2 parts vinegar and place near the problem area.
*Make a 50-50 mix of baking soda and sugar and place near baseboards.

Moths:
* Store clothing you want to protect in sealed boxes or bags with moth repellent sachets. Make sachets by filling small cotton bags with cedar shavings or dried herbs like rosemary, mint, lavender, or cloves.
Cockroaches:
*Mix 2 tsp. tea tree oil and 2 cups of water. Spray in affected areas.
*Apply a light dust of Borax around areas such as refrigerator, stove, baseboards, and ductwork.
Spiders:
* A lot of us do not like spiders at all-myself included, but they actually feed on insects like flies, mosquitoes, moths, and cockroaches. If possible, instead of killing them, it might be better to trap them and let them go outside. They can patrol the yard and prevent those other bothersome little creatures from getting inside!
No one likes bugs in their home or office no matter what time of year it is. No one likes toxic chemicals either. While we can’t completely get rid of the toxins around us, we can control the environment we live in to some degree. One of those ways is by using DIY Green Pest Control whenever possible.
