The holiday season is a magical time filled with traditions, joy, and family bonding. One of the best ways to embrace the festive spirit is by engaging in holiday crafts with kids. While it may seem like a simple activity, crafting with children has numerous benefits that extend beyond creating seasonal decorations.
Every Easter, I like to find a few fun crafts that my son and I can do together. It helps to remind us both to slow down and enjoy quality time together because crafting with your kids not only fosters creativity but also inspires them to use their imagination. It can strengthen family bonds while creating a lasting memory or feeling that a child has of the time that was invested. Crafting together also helps develop fine motor skills, and teaches patience and focus – all while creating a lasting keepsake for years to come. Except maybe when you are making something edible!

1. Encourages Creativity and Imagination
Crafting allows kids to express themselves in unique ways. When they choose colors, shapes, and designs, they engage their creativity and imagination. This not only helps develop their artistic skills but also fosters confidence in their ability to create something special.
2. Strengthens Family Bonds
Spending quality time making crafts together creates meaningful memories. In our busy world, setting aside time for crafting helps families slow down and enjoy each other’s company. Working together on a project also fosters teamwork, patience, and a sense of accomplishment.
3. Develops Fine Motor Skills
From cutting with scissors to gluing small decorations, crafting requires precision and coordination. These activities help develop fine motor skills, which are essential for writing, tying shoelaces, and other everyday tasks.
4. Teaches Patience and Focus
Holiday crafts often involve multiple steps, requiring kids to follow instructions, wait for glue to dry, or carefully assemble pieces. This teaches patience, problem-solving, and the ability to focus on a task—skills that benefit them in school and beyond.
5. Creates Cherished Keepsakes
Handmade crafts become treasured keepsakes that families can look back on for years to come.

In this blog post, you’ll find a tutorial on how to make a DIY Easter Peeps House
DIY Easter Peeps House
Materials Needed
Graham crackers (about 3 per house)
Royal icing or store-bought icing
Marshmallow Peeps (chicks or bunnies)
Candy decorations (jelly beans, sprinkles, mini chocolate eggs)
Shredded coconut (for grass, optional)
Green food coloring (if using coconut)
Small cardboard base or plate (for stability)
Piping bag or plastic sandwich bag with a corner snipped off
Edible Grass (optional)

Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Icing
If you’re using going to color your icing, prepare it ahead of time. The icing should be thick enough to act as a glue for your house. Transfer the icing into a piping bag or plastic sandwich bag and cut the tip off.
Step 2: Construct the House
Start by cracking 3 graham crackers in half. You’ll need 5 halves of the graham crackers for the walls and roof. Crack one of the halves in half again. You’ll need 1 quarter of a cracker as a support for the roof.
Use a knife to cut the cracker into a triangle.

Lay wax paper to use as your work surface and begin by piping the edges of the crackers with icing to assemble the house.
Place the triangle piece at the top of the back wall. Then “glue” the roof pieces on. Continue on to “glue” on the supporting walls.
Once you have completed the walls and roof, place in the freezer for about 10 minutes to allow the icing to harden, making it easier to transfer the house to a plate and place in the freezer to harden quicker.
After removing the house from the freezer, pipe icing along the bottom edges, then place it down on a plate.
Now it’s time to decorate.
Tips: Assemble the house first and then call the kids in to decorate to avoid any meltdowns.
Tips: If you’re not going to eat your DIY Easter Peeps House, use hot glue to assemble the house.
Tip: Instead of icing, you can also use candy melts.
Step 3: Decorate Your Peeps House
Place a Peep inside as the star of your house.
Use icing to attach candy decorations like jelly beans and mini eggs around the house.
Dye shredded coconut green with food coloring and sprinkle it around to create grass.
Add sprinkles or edible glitter for extra fun!
