DIY Bug Bite Relief Spray
What You’ll Need
To make this natural bug bite relief spray, gather the following ingredients:
2 Tbsp. Carrier Oil ( I used fractionated coconut oil)
15 drops lavender essential oil – Calms irritation and has antibacterial properties.
5-10 drops tea tree essential oil – Known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits.
15 drops peppermint essential oil – Provides a cooling effect that helps relieve itching.
Water
Funnel
1 small spray bottle

Why Use These Oils?
Lavender Oil – Lavender oil, which is derived from the lavender plant, has long been known to calm irritation and promote skin healing. The oil has antibacterial properties, soothing effects on the skin, and helps reduce redness and swelling associated with bug bites. It also has analgesic properties, which can help relieve discomfort and pain from the bites.
Tea Tree Oil – Tea tree oil is known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits. Tea tree oil has powerful antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties, which can help prevent infection in bug bites. It also helps reduce swelling, redness, and itching, making it an excellent remedy for irritated skin.
Peppermint Oil -Peppermint oil provides a cooling effect that helps relieve itching. Peppermint oil contains menthol, which has a natural numbing effect that can ease irritation and discomfort. It also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that can help reduce swelling and prevent infection.
Tip: Don’t forget the carrier oil and always patch test!
Why Use a Carrier Oil?
Some essential oils are highly concentrated and can cause skin irritation if applied directly. In this recipe, I use tea tree and peppermint oil, which are two oils that should generally not be applied directly to the skin. Tea tree oil may dry out your skin, and peppermint oil may cause skin irritation because it contains menthol. Carrier oils, like coconut oil or jojoba oil, help dilute essential oils while still allowing their beneficial properties to be effective.
Patch Test Before Use
Before applying the spray to larger areas of your skin, it’s important to do a patch test. Some people may have sensitivities or allergies to certain essential oils. Apply a small amount of the spray to a small area of your skin, such as the inside of your wrist, and wait 24 hours to check for any reactions.
Instructions
Add the carrier oil to the glass spray bottle using a funnel.
Add the essential oils, gently swirling to combine.
Fill the remainder with water- leaving about 1.5″ of room at the top.
Shake well before each use.
How to Use Your DIY Bug Bite Relief Spray
Shake the bottle to ensure the ingredients are well blended.
Spray directly onto bug bites and allow to air dry.
Reapply as needed to relieve itching and irritation.
Storage Tips
Store your bug bite relief spray in a cool, dark place. It should last for several months if kept properly sealed.
This DIY bug bite relief spray is an easy, effective, and natural way to soothe discomfort from insect bites. By using simple, natural ingredients, you can enjoy the outdoors without the itch. Give this recipe a try and experience the benefits of homemade skincare!
