Organizing any part of our living or work areas can feel overwhelming. Keeping our office or home office organized usually feels more stressful because no one wants important tasks or paperwork to fall through the cracks. The purpose of being organized is to be able to find the things we need when we need them and then, hopefully, be more productive. I don’t know about you, but when I can get more things done with less stress, I’m able to spend time with the people I care about while enjoying life more. Clean up after yourself at the end of the day or your time at the office station
At the end of your day or desk time, throw away any trash, get rid of any coffee or drink cups, and put away pens and pencils. Leave your desk tidy and organized. You’ll be ready to begin the next day or session ready to go!
Use one notebook to record all your notes, brainstorming, ideas, and to-dos
It doesn’t matter what kind of notebook it is. It can be fancy or a plain old-school notebook. I like composition notebooks. I once read a little blurb in a magazine years ago where someone said they always used a composition notebook because they couldn’t tear out the pages and always start a new page. It helped them to just keep going with their notes and to-dos. I found that to be true as well. It helps me curb perfectionism and keep the notes and ideas flowing.
Use a To-Do pad
Transfer the next day’s tasks from your notebook onto a to-do pad. I write down my tasks and then put them right on top of my notebook in the center of my desk for the next day. There are so many cute to-do pads on Amazon.
Use a big wall calendar
Have one big wall calendar in a central location in your office. I no longer use a paper appointment book. I put all my appointments in my phone, but I can easily jot down appointments there before I transfer them to my phone and I make notes about other people’s appointments that I need to keep track of. For instance, if an employee tells me they have to leave early on a certain day I jot it down there or if my daughter tells me she is going out of town on a particular day, I’ll make a note of it there.
Have one Inbox
Have one bin where all incoming paper comes through. If an item needs attention, you’ll be able to find it there. From there, you can go through the bin and take out whatever needs immediate attention.
Keep an ongoing list of items that need to be purchased
Keep a list of different items that need to be purchased. Add to it as you become aware of an item that needs replenishment. The list might have office supplies on it like printer ink or pens or paper clips. It might also have a window cleaner or a garden hose. If you’re getting ready to place an order, or go out to a store, just highlight the items you’ll be purchasing from that store. Keep the rest of the ongoing list instead of copying it over.
Sort Mail Immediately
As soon as mail arrives, or immediately upon picking up the stack of it, go through it and immediately toss recyclables in the recycle bin, trash in the trash bin, shred what needs to be shredded, put bills in their respective area, items in a to be filed bin or file, and anything else in a to-do bin.
Keep desk organizing accessories updated
Keep bins, tape dispensers, and pen containers updated with stylish versions whenever possible. Having an attractive-looking desk lends itself to wanting to keep it clean and organized.
Keep like items together
Have specific spaces set aside for items like incoming and outgoing mail, bills, and filing. Always put those items in their respective places to keep them from disappearing.
Have a charging station for all your gadgets
Have chargers set up for all your chargeable items like cell phones, smart watches, tablets, or iPads.

Lisa is a mother of three lovely young women and is a new grandmother to a baby boy! She has been married to her high school sweetheart for more than thirty years.
