DIY Yarn Pumpkin Wreath

The fall season kind of snuck up on me this year. Trying to plan a wedding in the middle of the holiday season has not left much room for actual holiday planning. But I’ve been seriously missing that holiday feeling this year so I wanted to come up with an easy craft that could take my mind off wedding stuff and decorate for fall.

I’m sure if you’re inept at crafting you’ve seen the yarn pompom craze that’s been sweeping the internet. But my favorites, are the yarn balls before they become the pompom poof.

First, I made garland inspired by this post, just something simple and cute for me.

Then I started thinking that these little pumpkins could be something else even more adorable that the kids could participate in the crafting. I don’t have any kids but I know crafting with kids around the holidays is half the holiday fun. So here’s a craft for the whole family.

DIY Yarn Pumpkin Wreath:

Materials:

• Orange Yarn
• Green pipe cleaners
• Scissors
• Paper plate
• Hot glue gun and glue

Instructions:

Using your paper plate and scissors, cut a large hole in the middle of the plate, leaving a trim roughly 2 inches wide.

Take a pipe cleaner and wrap it around the trim, twisting the pieces together 2x and then wrapping them again together at the top. This should form a loop to be able to hang the wreath. (Add another pipe cleaner loop for a leaf!)

Next is making the pumpkin. Cut a piece of yarn about 8 inches long and set it aside.

For the actual pumpkin, you take your orange yarn and start wrapping it around your 4 fingers. Wrap it about 100 times and be sure to keep the lines as straight as possible without crisscrossing too much.

When you get to about 100 wraps, slowly pull it off your fingers and lay it on top of your piece that was cut earlier, opposite the direction of the yarn. Using that piece, pull it together and tie tightly. Cut the excess yarn. Make as many pumpkins as you need to fill the entire trim of the plate.

When you have enough to cover the plate begin gluing them down with the hot glue gun.

And there you have it! A yarn pumpkin wreath perfect for the fall season. I think a project like this would be perfect for a classroom too. Try using crafty glue instead of hot glue and it’s good to go!
