Table salt is a natural product that can be used for so many things around your home. So, with the rising interest in eliminating toxic chemicals from our routines and in our homes, I’m eager to share a list of 10 Ways to Use Table Salt at Home. Some of my favorites are natural cleaning methods but I bet there are some you’ll be surprised to know.
9 Ways to Use Table Salt at Home
Clean mugs and glasses
Salt works great to take hard water marks out of glasses and coffee or tea stains out of mugs. Just put some salt inside the mug or glass and scrub the marks in question with a scrubby. It’ll take them right off. For more stubborn stains you may have to repeat the process.
Removes odors from cutting boards
Pour a generous amount of salt right onto the cutting board and rub it into the board with a damp dishcloth. Wash with soapy water when done.
Remove rust
Remove rust from household gadgets or tools by mixing lemon juice and salt to form a paste. Rub the paste on the area in question till it’s gone.
Repel ants
Keep ants at bay by spreading salt in areas that you want to keep ants away from. Salt doesn’t necessarily kill them, but you can keep them away from the food pantry this way.
Removes water marks from wood
Salt can be used to remove water marks from wood. Mix salt with a little water to create a paste. Rub the salt paste into the stain going toward the wood grain. Wipe away with a clean, damp cloth.
Deodorize shoes
If you need to freshen up some stinky shoes, fill them with salt and let them sit for 24 hours. Vacuum up the salt when done.
Clean an iron
Clean build-up from your iron by sprinkling salt on a dry cotton towel. Run your hot, dry iron over the salt until it’s clean. Unplug the iron and let it cool down before cleaning away the salt.
A Natural mouthwash
A saltwater mouthwash helps soothe sore throats, reduce inflammation, and fight bad breath. Mix ½ tsp. salt and 1 cup of water. Swish, swish, swish.
Body scrub
Salt is a gentle way to scrub away dead skin. Its skin-softening exfoliant properties leave skin feeling silky and soft. Mix equal parts of salt and Olive oil to form a body scrub. About a ¼ cup, each should be sufficient for 1 or 2 showers.
