Finding ornaments and decorating my Christmas tree is one of my favorite parts of the holiday season. It’s something most people who celebrate Christmas have in common. It can be a special and different experience for everyone. Some people have themes, some have multiple trees, and some have a design that never falters. In my household, we have one small tree that has no theme, but I like to think it tells a little story of our lives.
A long-standing tradition in my family has been gifting ornaments, something my mother started long ago. Now I carry on this tradition with my fiancé. The ornaments range from places we’ve visited to reflections of our interests. Last year my fiancé got me a Dave Matthews Band ornament and I bought us a set of Doctor Who themed ornaments. This year, however, we realized the severe lack of Harry Potter ornaments. Harry Potter is a major love of ours, how could we have overlooked this?
Once it became apparent that we needed more Harry Potter, I began the internet search immediately. Amazon wasn’t much help and Etsy had too much to choose from. Instead, I thought I’d try my hand at making my own.

Below are 5 different DIY Harry Potter Ornaments:
-
Chapter Illustration Tags
Supplies:
- Harry Potter books
- Ability to copy books (copy machine or scanner/printer)
- Cardstock paper
- Tag template (here)
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- Ribbon of choice*
Instructions:
Print out your desired tag template and cut it out. Choose desired Harry Potter book chapter illustration. Make a copy onto cardstock paper – I used a manila folder cut in half. Use tag template to trace an outline over the illustration copy. Cut out the traced tag and make a hole punch at the top of the tag. Tie ribbon through it and it’s ready to hang! Feel free to add anything extra – glitter or bells (I found both at the dollar store).
-
Pencil Wand
Supplies:
- Sharpened pencil
- Hot glue
- Brown paint
- Ribbon of choice*
Instructions:
Use hot glue to “draw” designs around the eraser end of the pencil as desired. When the glue is dry, coat pencil with brown paint until opaque. When the paint is dry, wrap your ribbon of choice around the middle of the pencil and use a dollop of hot glue to hold the ribbon in place on the pencil. Ready to hang! You can also add extras to this ornament such as glitter or gold paint to accentuate the glue markings.

Winged Key
Supplies:
- Cardstock
- Light Weight Skeleton Key
- Hot glue
- Silver or gold paint
- Ribbon of choice*
Instructions:
Place the key (I got mine at Michaels, they can also be found on Amazon) on cardstock paper (I used a manila folder; you can also use a paper plate) and draw desired wing design around the key. I used a picture from google images for a wing shape reference; they can be whatever you want. When finished drawing, cut out the wings. After they’re cut out, outline the wings using hot glue to accentuate the wings. You can do more than an outline if you want. When it’s all dry, coat the wings with your desired color paint – I used silver. You could skip the glue outline and go straight to the paint and that would be cute too. Either way, when the paint is dry you can now glue the key to the wings. Then just tie your choice of ribbon through the top of the key and it’s ready to hang.

Potion Ornament
Supplies:
- Potions label
- Clear round ornament – preferably plastic (found mine at Michaels, can also be found at dollar store)
- Glitter (color as desired)
- Mod Podge
- Medium paintbrush
- Ribbon of choice*
Instructions:
Print out potion label of choice or draw your own! I found a free printable set here. Cut out your potion label and brush Mod Podge lightly on the back of label then place on the ornament. Be sure all edges are glued down and lightly coat the top of the label with Mod Podge. When the glue is dry, fill half of the ornament with the desired amount of glitter. Tie ribbon through the top of the ornament to hang!

Floating Candle
Supplies:
- Flameless tea light “candle”
- Hot glue
- White paint
- Paintbrush
- Clear Fishing line
- Bottle (not to be used in ornament)
Instructions:
Lightly hot glue bottom of the tea light to the top of the bottle. I used another bottle of paint. This is to prop up the candle while you hot glue around the edges. It will have to be removed when you’re finished. Once it’s secure, start gluing the edges as if dripping down like candle wax. Continue design around entire candle. When it’s completely dry, take your piece of fishing line and glue the ends to the candle in an arch form. Glue the edges down with a dripping design as well. When it’s dry, paint the hot glue completely white. Once the paint dries, it’s ready to hang! I used a thin piece of raffia ribbon, but using the fishing line gives the best floating effect.

*I found raffia ribbon at Dollar Tree in the garden section, but you can use any ribbon desired. Keeping with the Harry Potter theme feel free to use a house colored ribbon!
When your ornaments are complete, hang them on your tree or gift them to your fellow Harry Potter fans. Trust me, everyone knows someone who likes Harry Potter.
