The 100th day of school is a special milestone, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a fun, creative project that stands out! A LEGO-themed hat is a perfect way to combine creativity, color, and a love for building blocks into a wearable masterpiece. Whether it’s for your child’s school event or classroom activity, here’s a step-by-step guide to creating a 100 Days of School Lego Hat that’s sure to impress.
My 9-year-old son has been a LEGO fanatic for the past 5 years. He became enthralled with the love of building when he was about 4 years old. He’s never been interested in free building, only the sets with instruction booklets thicker than anything he’d ever read, especially at the age of 4.
His love of LEGOs started with a sick visit to the doctor’s office. After most visits, he was given a bouncy ball or stickers which he almost always passed on (thankfully my car window has never seen a sticker in its life). After this particular visit to the doctor, he was given a small LEGO Duplo set that included all of 10 pieces. When fully finished he had created a cute little yellow and orange duck that we still have today. He was smitten. And then it was all over for our wallets!
Even now, years later at the age of 9 he almost exclusively completes Lego sets in the 18+ category, which if you’re a fellow LEGO parent, you know that they usually cost over $200 a box! It’s an expensive hobby for sure! My house is reluctantly filled with LEGO displays- from the White House in my family room below our TV to the World Globe, Checkers set, Soccer Field, Delorian, Super Mario Block, and the full Pack-Man Arcade Game scattered on bookshelves as if they’re purposely set in places to look as though they’re a part of my decor style. I’m unintentionally going for the neutral minimalistic LEGO theme!
DIY 100th Day of School Lego Hat
For this year’s 100th day of school celebration, he was instructed to make a hat with 100 items to celebrate the annual milestone. Together, we came up with the idea of this LEGO-themed hat. It was surprisingly tough to find 100 Lego bricks that didn’t already belong to a set because like I said he doesn’t like to free-build. After scouring the house for random pieces that he felt ok parting with, we came up short. Ultimately, he found himself disassembling an old ice cream truck he no longer cared for, reminiscing about how it had driven him crazy when he misplaced a piece and had to improvise with another piece to complete it. It was the sweetest conversation about something so unimportant to me but so massive to him!
I surprisingly found this little school DIY project to be a lovely bonding time. It’s fun, easy, and inexpensive to make if you already have thousands of LEGO bricks scattered around your house. Put them to good use and make your DIY 100 Days of School Lego Hat.
Before you start crafting, gather these materials:
A Sturdy Hat- We used a Black Top Hat
1 Sheet Each of Cardstock, Foam, or Felt in the colors Yellow, White, & Black- We used felt.
Scissors
Pen
Hot Glue Gun & Sticks – My favorite Ryobi Hot Glue Gun
100 Lego Bricks or Mini Figurines
Assembly:
Prepare the Hat: Start with a clean, sturdy hat. If you’re using a foam visor or lightweight cap, ensure it’s firm enough to hold the weight of 100 LEGO bricks.
Plan Your Design: Before gluing, lay the LEGO pieces on the hat to decide on your design. You can create a random pattern, spell out “100,” or build small structures to attach to the hat. This step ensures balance and prevents overloading one side.
Attach the LEGO Bricks: Use a hot glue gun to attach the LEGO bricks and mini-figures to the hat. Apply a small amount of glue to the base of each piece and press it firmly onto the hat. Start with larger pieces to establish the design and fill in gaps with smaller bricks. Something I assured my son multiple times was that we could peel the glue off later and reuse the Legos or return them to their original place.
Add Personal Touches: If desired, cut out shapes or letters from cardstock or foam sheets. For example, create a banner that says “100 Days of Fun” or “LEGO Master” and attach it to the hat. Use markers or stickers to add extra details.
Check for Stability: Once everything is glued in place, gently shake the hat to ensure all pieces are secure. Add extra glue to any wobbly pieces if needed.
Let It Dry: Allow the glue to fully dry before wearing the hat. This step is crucial for durability, especially if the hat will be worn all day.
Tips for Success
Keep It Lightweight: While LEGO bricks aren’t very heavy by themselves, the combined weight can add up. Try using lighter materials like foam accents if you’re using a smaller hat.
Get Creative: Incorporate LEGO mini-figures, wheels, or special edition pieces for extra fun. Remember, the glue will peel off to restore it to its original form.
Involve Your Child: Let them help design and place the LEGO bricks. It makes the project more meaningful and exciting for them to have made it themselves.
Use Strong Adhesive: A hot glue gun works best for securing the bricks and they can be removed later.
Creating a 100th-day LEGO hat is a fun and memorable way to mark this educational milestone. You can incorporate these same ideas to make a 100th-day LEGO t-shirt. With just a few materials and a little creativity, you can craft a unique accessory that’s both functional and fabulous. So gather your LEGO bricks and start building—the possibilities are endless!
