Back-to-school season can be exciting for most children, but for some kids, it can also bring feelings of worry, overwhelm, or sensory overload. Whether it’s test anxiety, social stress, or just a need to fidget while focusing, school-friendly fidget toys can be a great way to help calm anxious kids and support self-regulation in the classroom.

About halfway into my son’s 3rd-grade school year, he told me that he would sometimes bite on his pencils and chew on his shirt when he felt nervous before or during a test. I asked if something or someone at school was bothering him- he said no. I asked him if he felt this way throughout the whole day or if he felt this way every day- he said no. I then asked him to tell me in his own words why he thought he was biting and chewing on things while at school, especially because I had never seen him do this at home.
When he told me that he sometimes got nervous while taking certain tests, I immediately felt my heart sink. I hated the idea that he was feeling uneasy at school and that I wasn’t there to comfort him. So, after speaking with his teachers, my son and I decided he would try some different exercises to help regulate his test anxiety while at school.
We practiced intentional counting and breathing exercises along with the use of specific school-friendly fidget toys that his teachers approved of. I also purchased rubber pencil toppers to help prevent any broken teeth!
Why Fidget Toys Help Anxious Kids
For many kids, especially those with anxiety, ADHD, or sensory processing challenges, the school day can feel overwhelming. The pressure to sit still, stay quiet, and focus for long periods can trigger stress—especially in busy classrooms filled with noise, transitions, and expectations.
Fidgeting isn’t about being disruptive—it’s often a coping mechanism. For many children with anxiety, ADHD, or sensory sensitivities, fidget toys offer a physical outlet that helps them focus, reduce stress, and stay grounded. If you have a child who would benefit from the use of non-disruptive and school-friendly fidget toys, check out our list below. The key is choosing low-noise, low-distraction options that can be easily managed within a classroom setting.
Tips for Using Fidget Toys in School
Fidget toys provide a safe, non-disruptive outlet for movement and sensory input. They help children calm their minds by giving their hands something to do—releasing nervous energy and helping the brain refocus. Remind your child that these are for anxiety relief only and not for play.
Choose quiet, discreet fidgets approved by the teacher or school.
Teach kids how and when to use them responsibly.
Have a designated “fidget zone” in the desk or backpack.
Rotate options to keep them fresh and effective.
