When I started thinking about how I was going to prepare these Red, White, and Blue Jello Shots, I originally planned on using Knox gelatin and flavoring it with coconut milk and sugar. This seems to be one of the most common techniques to make the white layer. However, after preparing it, the smell alone was too intolerable. I knew I could not serve this to anyone, nor was I even willing to take a risk trying it myself. So, I decided to try Cool Whip to make the white layer and I think the taste is far superior and compliments the red and blue Jello much better.
I think the best way to prepare these Red White and Blue Jello Shots is to make them the night before your party, especially if you’re doing a lot of other food prep. They’ll stay fresh in the fridge overnight and for about 5 days after if you have leftovers. Ready to make them?

Red White and Blue Jello Shots
What You Need
3 oz. Red Jello
3 oz. Blue Jello
Cool Whip
Plastic Syringe (no needle)
Mini Silicone Spatula
4th of July Sprinkles
*This recipe yields approximately 40 2oz. cups
How to Make Red White and Blue Jello Shots
Start with the red Jello and prepare according to the box instructions.
Using a plastic syringe, fill the cups 1/3 of the way with red Jello and then let them set in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours, uncovered. What I really like about using the clear 2 oz. condiment cups is that you can easily see the 3 beautiful layers and they have lids if you’re taking them to a party.
Next, I used Cool Whip for the white layer. Mix cool whip in a bowl with a spoon until it’s smooth and becomes more malleable.
Using a mini rubber spatula, spread the Cool Whip on top of the red Jello- AFTER THE RED HAS SET FOR 2-3 HOURS. This part is tricky and a little messy. I used the edges of the spatula to smooth and pat down the Cool Whip. You can also use a damp paper towel to wipe the sides of the cup. Let the middle layer set for 2-3 hours in the refrigerator.
Last, prepare the blue layer.
Once the white layer is done setting, prepare the blue Jello using 1 cup of hot water, 1/2 cup of cold water, and 1/2 cup of chilled Coconut Rum or chilled Vodka. I like to add the alcohol to the top layer so you can taste it right away. You can also add it to both the red and blue layers. Or make a non-alcoholic version for the kids and follow the boxed instructions.
Slowly add the last layer of blue Jello on top of the Cool Whip- AFTER THE COOL WHIP HAS SET FOR 2-3 HOURS. Don’t rush this last step because if you squirt the blue out too quickly it will disfigure the Cool Whip layer and cause little holes. Let the blue layer set in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours.
The final touches.
If you’d like to add sprinkles to the top layer for added fun, add them right before serving. If you add the sprinkles directly to the Jello while it’s setting and then they sit in the fridge for too long, the sprinkles will begin to melt away and get soggy.
At first glance, this recipe may seem intimidating, but it’s really a breeze to make. It’s just a matter of preparing two different flavors of Jello and adding a layer of Cool Whip in between. You do have to wait for each layer to set, so it’s not a super quick recipe, but overall, it’s pretty simple. And the final product is definitely worth it! Enjoy!
